Parent/Carer Safety Alert:
TikTok “Tap Out Challenge”

We’ve been informed of a dangerous TikTok trend that some young people around the country may be attempting. Please take a moment to read and share this important information.

What is the “Tap Out Challenge”?

This trend involves one young person putting another in a chokehold until the other “taps out”. Although it may look harmless or playful online, it is extremely dangerous.

Even when no marks are left, strangulation can cause:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Brain injury
  • Long-term health problems
  • In severe cases, fatalities

Signs to look out for

These can indicate a child has taken part or been harmed:

  • Marks or bruising on the neck
  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Red spots around the neck/ears/eyelids
  • Hoarse voice
  • Severe headache
  • Confusion or memory loss
  • Head injury from collapsing/fainting

Why young people are at risk

Online videos often show participants laughing or unharmed, which misleads children into thinking it’s safe. Many don’t understand how quickly this can cause serious harm.

Similar names include: Fainting Game, Blackout Challenge, Elevator, Hangman

How Parents/Carers can help

  • Talk openly with your child about the risks
  • Reassure them they won’t be in trouble for speaking up
  • Stay alert to new online trends
  • Report any concerns to school or safeguarding staff

If you have worries about your child’s safety or wellbeing, please contact Tute, school or your local LEA safeguarding team for support.
